This morning, we are going to do a bit of drama for our English lesson. The illustrator of 'What the Ladybird Heard' has produced a video to explain how to make a picture book theatre. You can use this story or one of your own. Year 4s, if you choose one of your own books, it would be a good idea to maybe do a scene or a chapter (depending on the length of the book).
Click on the narrator image for an example of a short script. You could film your picture book theatre and upload it to Teams. I would love to see what you have made!

This morning, we are learning about possessive apostrophes. Can you remember what a noun is? It is a person, place or thing. When a 'noun' belongs to someone, we use an apostrophe. For example:
Rachel's coat was hanging up.

You should have a good understanding about the article after answering the comprehension questions.

Good morning - did you have much snow yesterday? I can't believe how much we have had this year. Today is Safer Internet Day, so you will find a video and reading task to complete as part of today's English lesson. But first, let's get warmed up to start the day.....

Safer Internet Day
Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people and inspire a national conversation.
The campaign sees over 1,700 organisations unite to raise awareness of online safety issues and run events and activities right across the UK.
Globally, Safer Internet Day is celebrated in over a hundred countries, coordinated by the joint Insafe/INHOPE network, with the support of the European Commission, and national Safer Internet Centres across Europe.
It calls upon young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet. Get involved to play your part by watching the video and then completing the comprehension activity.

Have you noticed how you feel after you have finished the workout? Do you feel you have more energy and feel happy you made it through to the end? Exercise releases something called 'endorphins' -which are chemicals in our brains - these make us happy. That is why exercise is so important, not only does it help us have a healthy body but it helps us have a healthy mind too!

A new age began when iron replaced bronze as the main metal for tools and weaponry. Society changed a lot and people lived in tribes that were often at war with each other. Iron Age people (sometimes called Celts) built hillforts for themselves where they could live and farm. The hillforts also provided protection and a good lookout place for any enemy tribes approaching. Imagine you had to build a hillfort with no supermarkets, cars or online shopping, everything you need must be grown or made within the hillfort including food, clothes, cooking pots and weapons for protection. Look at the words in the worksheet and check you understand what each word means, using a dictionary if you need to. Choose any four of the words to write on a piece of paper. Then, read How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth, marking off the words you have chosen as you see them in the story. How many did you get? Write on the Teams chat how many and I will see who got the most! Using a thesaurus, write a list of synonyms (words that mean the same) for each of the four words.

ideas about the different steps that might be needed, including problems that would need to be overcome (such as how to get the mammoth into the bath) and possible solutions. Does it matter whether the steps are taken in chronological order or not?

Reread How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth and look out for some of the features of instructional texts listed in the table, ticking the ones that you find. Are there any instructional features missed out of the book?

Stick a copy of the instructions from yesterday onto the middle of a coloured sheet of A3 paper. Turn it into a poster to show the features of instructional texts by labelling them or highlighting in different colours and including a colour code key. You can use your table from earlier as a prompt for remembering the features to look out for.

Reread 'How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth' up to pages 17-18, pause and look at the the illustration of the mammoth stuck up a tree. Talk about how you would get the mammoth down from the tree in three steps and come up with verbal instructions. Remember to use imperative verbs!
Today, you are going to follow a set of written instructions about making a model woolly mammoth. Read through the whole set of instructions before you start. Why might it be helpful to read all the way through first? Discuss why the ‘You will need’ section might be important.

God’s people finally got to go home after living in a strange place for a long time. How would you feel if you were not able to live in your home for a long time. What would you miss? How would you feel? Think about the world today – many children are refugees and have no place to live. Write a prayer asking God to help anyone who is homeless or unable to live in their own home. Think about forgiveness and giving a second chance to people.

Amp Up the Sound!
The loudness of sound, or its amplitude, is measured using the decibel. Small differences in amplitude (short sound waves) make quiet sounds, while large differences (tall sound waves) make loud sounds. Try this fun demonstration - cover a radio speaker with a sheet of paper, and sprinkle uncooked grains of rice on top. Turn the radio on and observe the rice. Next, crank up the music all the way — and watch out for flying rice! Think about: “What relationship exists between the loudness of sound and amplitude?” (Hint: the bigger the amplitude, the taller the sound waves, and, therefore, the more rice will jump off the paper).

“Some sounds have so much amplitude, they can damage our ears!” Investigate decibel levels, then design a hearing safety poster.

Today, we are learning about imperative verbs. These are 'bossy verbs' - words that command somebody to do something, such as ‘jump’ or ‘wriggle’.
Look at the 'Imperative Ducks' worksheet and discuss the definitions of any unfamiliar words, using a dictionary if required.
These imperative verbs all relate to washing something. Look at page 2 of the book and use the imperative verbs worksheet to explain possible ways of cleaning the different parts of the mammoth. For example, ‘scrub the tusks with a toothbrush’ or ‘scour behind his ears extra carefully’.
Now, you are going to practise using these imperative verbs whilst cleaning! Do you have a dirty teddy bear or some dirty toys? Using soapy water and cleaning equipment (sponges, scourers, toothbrushes and cotton buds), give them a good wash. Whilst you are washing them, describe to someone what you are doing (don't forget to use imperative verbs!).

Spend some time finishing off your story this morning. If you have finished, your next job is to self edit. This means to improve your work and make it a bit better.
Some questions to ask yourself.....
Did you go through the checklist after you had finished your story? If not, take some time to carefully check it.
Have you included any adverbials or Stone Age vocabulary? Have a look at the word mat and visuals to see if you could add something into your story and check your spelling.
Do your sentences start with a capital letter and end with a full stop or another punctuation mark e.g. ? or ! ?
Have you used capital letters for proper nouns?
Could you make a sentence sound a little better? Check you have used expanded noun phrases or use a thesaurus to find a better word.
Have you used paragraphs?
Use a different coloured pen (at school we use green) to add your improvements. This will show me which parts of your story you have chosen to edit (change) to improve your work.

Think about - how, what, where, why and when. For example...
I predict this book is about cleaning a mammoth because in the picture there are soap bubbles and a giant bath tub.
Try and use different sentence starters e.g. I think, I wonder, I believe etc.

In this lesson, we are going to try to get into the ’survival’ mindset that hunter-gatherers needed to have. Imagine you have been transported back in time to the Stone Age and that you will need to think like a hunter-gatherer in order to survive!
Go outside to explore the natural environment for assets that might help you survive! Assets might include natural materials (wood, stone etc.), living things that could be eaten or used for clothing or bone, weapons, places of shelter and edible berries, fruit or leaves (do not touch or taste them though!).

Reading Books
Reading books will be sent home on a Monday. Please can your child/ren keep the book bag at home until Friday. Reading records need to be completed and signed - these will be checked on a Monday morning. There are useful tips and questions to ask your children whilst reading with them. Our focus this week is persuasive writing. Following on from the 'Meal On The Mountain', this week you are going to pretend you own a restaurant in the mountains! Your task is to design an advert to persuade adults to come and eat a meal at your restaurant whilst taking a break from hiking! As part of our reward system, everyone has been given their own pretend passport. When the children are demonstrating how to be a good British Citizen, they will be rewarded with a sticker. A combination of these stickers and stamps in their books for good work, will add up to prizes!

Many Alpine Farmers in the Swiss Alps, offer hikers traditional lunches. Can you research the types of food they offer? Using your 'instruction' skills, write out recipes for them. You could even try and make some of the dishes at home! I would love to see pictures of them.
